MISSION STATEMENT

HISTORY AND PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION

We offered kindergarten to grade two in the first year; and now in the 9th year (2006-2007) IQRA has expanded to the grade nine level.  The number of students have soared from just 16 in the first year to 340 in our current 2006-2007 year.  IQRA is no longer an elementary school but it is also a junior high school as well, maa shaa Allah!

Our students love, value and appreciate the many facilities available, which are conducive to the development of their growing minds and bodies.  Our recreational facilities – gymnasium, outdoor fields, basketball court, swings, senior and junior playgrounds –provide our students with a variety of activities for physical education classes, recess, lunch, before and after school.

Visitors to IQRA have been highly impressed by the high standard of indoor facilities, including a state-of-the-art computer lab.  The large, bright classrooms are clean, nicely decorated and well organized.  They provide our students with the perfect environment in which to learn and develop their intellect.

THE NAME, IQRA

In the Arabic language, the literal meaning of the verb Iqra is “to read.”  It was the first word of the Qur'an, revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by the angel Gabriel.

ISLAMIC STUDIES AND ARABIC LANGUAGE

All students, starting from kindergarten, receive on a daily basis, one period of Arabic language and one period of Islamic studies.

The school follows the mainstream, balanced, Sunni Muslim teachings.

CERTIFICATION, CURRICULUM AND TEACHERS

Since its inception, the Ministry of Education has fully accredited and certified the IQRA Islamic School (To view the certificate, please click on this link.)  Our high standards, and the requirements of the Ministry of Education also demand that our staff be certified and experienced.  The curriculum used at IQRA Islamic School is the same one taught at public schools, coupled with Islamic perspective. At IQRA, we do not just meet the requirements of the Ministry of Education; rather we aim to surpass and exceed them.

STANDARD AND ACHIEVEMENTS

For the fourth year in a row, our grade four students, and for the second year in a row our grade seven students have surpassed the results of the entire District of Surrey in the provincial government's province wide Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA).   During the year 2003-2004, again, our students exceeded, by a wide margin, the other school districts in the province.  We also exceeded the results of most of the other independent schools as well, Mashaa Allah!  The results of the entire schools province wide are also on the Ministry of Education's web site: www.bced.gov.bc.ca/assessment/fsa/results/ 

Our commitment is not just to continue with the same results in the years to come, but to do even better, in sha’Allah.

UPCOMING PROJECT: IQRA SECONDARY SCHOOL

In sha’Allah, we plan to build a new full-size gymnasium and a second building to accommodate a secondary school.  We are projecting to have phase one of this ambitious project completed and in operation by the fall of 2007, in sha’Allah.  This will enable us to move beyond grade nine and to accommodate more students.  We anticipate the total cost of the project to be in the range of $3.8 million.

• Provide quality, educational programs that integrate academic, Islamic, and Arabic education
• Promote excellent personal manners, high moral values, and develop strong leadership skills
• Prepare students to become good citizens and contributing members of society
• Empower students to seek and succeed in post-secondary education
• Guide students to develop life skills and interests

IQRA Islamic School is an inspiring, stimulating and motivating educational institution.   Numerous field trips (both within and outside of the province), outdoor camps, motivational speakers, science fair and sports day are all part of the events that contribute to the culture of IQRA Islamic School.  Students benefit from a high standard of education, but still have plenty of time to have fun and enjoy the friendship of fellow Muslims – all in a friendly and well-rounded Islamic environment.

AFFILIATION AND CONNECTION

Is IQRA Islamic School connected or affiliated with other schools or organizations called IQRA elsewhere?

No.

As we mentioned earlier, the word IQRA was the first word revealed to Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him). Therefore, it is a popular name that many schools and/or Islamic organizations use.
